She phoned Bob Tyndale later that night. "I was really impressed with what you said today. I - do you really think that when we die we carry on living? that it's not the End?"
"No. There's more to it than that. Sometimes we get another chance... and there's some deep theology there, which I don't want to go into at the moment - but it's important, it's vital, to do as well as we can with this life, and not just let it fizzle along."
"Well, what should I do? You know what a mess I'm in, waiting for Chris to show up again so I can divorce him, in a mess... I drink too much, smoke too much, at least I don't want to play the field any more, I'm completely bored with all that..."
"You need to rethink your life. Your values are all wrong. [Your LTW is now no longer woohoo with 20 different Sims. Instead it's Make 100,000 simoleans!] Change those awful, impossibly low-slung jeans out for some decent ones. Get a decent job. If you can, sort things out with Chris."
Well, Jessica was nothing if not a trier.
She cut down on her drinking, got herself a job as a Stand-Up Comedian, and started to paint on her (previously completely unused) easel. She promised Robert she would play the organ for him at the next service, and that she would buy a dress with her first pay-packet.
"Good! I'll ask Coral to drop over for a natter. She would be happy to go shopping with you, if that helps!"
Coral called in the next day.
"Well, young lady, the first thing we are going to do is tidy up a little."
They quickly cleaned Jessica's little house, cleared out her bottles, and planned a shopping trip.
Christian dropped in the next evening.
She asked him to move back in.
"I don't know, Jess. There's no-one else, but I can't stand your nagging."
"Nagging? Why, you..."
He wasn't sure, and they wound up having another fight. Theirs had always been a very volatile relationship; both were very sociable and liked to flirt.
And she also had a rotten cough. She didn't smoke herself any more - well, only the odd one to be sociable. Robert asked Coral Oldie to keep an eye on her. When she arrived she put Jessica straight to bed. "Rest! I'll make you some nice tea."
Feeling a little better by the weekend, she took herself off to a dress shop to look for something a little less revealing to wear.
She smoothed down her long wavy hair and tied it hair into pigtails. She was a mature Sim, after all, as Coral had pointed out.
With Coral's encouragement, she kept apologizing to Chris, and eventually he moved back in.
He joined in with the music group too. Occasionally they even played at the Sistine Chapel, close to St Isidore's.
"I could smell her on his clothes. Why? Why does he keep doing this? Maybe I'm not good enough... I need to try harder."
"Hello, lover. All set for tonight's performance?"
"Yes. I'm playing the 'Fool for Christ' part."
"Once I'm at the console it doesn't matter what I'm wearing. And I get completely lost in the music."
Chris had a fine, baritone voice, and she loved hearing him sing.
But she was not deaf to the neighbourhood gossip: she heard regularly that he was still playing the field. As a good Christian wife, she was told, she had to forgive him. She tried, very hard.
"Chris I am so sorry. I keep thinking you're with - someone else, when you're late back from work. And I keep thinking I can smell someone else's perfume on you."
"Darling, I wasn't with anyone. I went for a beer with someone from work. That's all. That little dive bar downtown. There are always women there. It must be their perfume you're smelling."
They still fought. Sometimes it just didn't seem right that he was still misbehaving, and yet she was the one who had to apologise. But when she asked Robert Tyndale about it, he said that Chris would have his own reckoning with the Deity when he died. And Chris was a lot older than she was. They had fewer fights than before, and muddled along fairly well.
She still had that awful cough though, it just didn't seem to get better.
The Sistine Chapel is a fabulous build by StephSim at Mod the Sims 2, which I have modified a little.
