The Farmer Wants a Wife

Day Two

The Remaining Contestants

Gabe insisted that the contestants should be provided with suitable clothing, as most of them had turned up in heels or summer dresses. "It can be quite chilly here at times. It's autumn now. And flat shoes, preferably boots - there was thunder yesterday, the ground will be wet and muddy. Trousers are good, you'll be bending or kneeling on and off all day."

As the production company was paying for them, Gabe took some photographs of the clothes the contestants chose and sent these with his daily update email.

Juliette looks fine, if conventional.
Natasha insisted that her bum looks too big in trousers.
Tara in her turn insisted that these trainers are machine washable. She told Gabe in confidence that she got Athlete's Foot if she wore Wellington boots.
Chastity says she always wears purple. Sturdy shoes work too.

Roxie's original outfit would have been fine for gardening in summer.

As would Meadow's. Shorts are a nice touch :)

Day 2: Farming and Fishing

In the morning, all the contestants were instructed to do farm work. This included fertilise the soil, tend the garden and the orchard, there were leaves to sweep, a late crop of tomatoes to plant, and fruit trees to tend.

The contestants and Gabe all worked hard; Gabe kept an eye on them and noticed that Juliette had a tendency to rest by the TV, and Natasha couldn't wait to get back into the sauna.

At last an intelligent conversation with Chastity!

Meadow got really involved in the gardening.

While Juliette thought sweeping leaves was so much like sweeping floors that it was a cleaner's job. "Why can't the maid do this? I do enough clearing up at home."

Chastity and  Natasha were playing a ball game in the greenhouse at one point, which made Gabe a little uneasy, but a quick phonecall to the Producer gave the response "It's good TV, let them!"

After a break for lunch, Sean Tsirnikov, the chap from the Fishing Club, came to explain the rudiments of fishing to them all, and to invite them to join his fishing club.

Everyone seemed to manage to find their way to the pond except Natasha, who got lost. Gabe had to go and fetch her.

There were several slips in the mud around the pond.

Chastity just kept on catching boots.

"Who threw all these boots in here anyway?"

"Must have been the production team. The pond wasn't here a month ago."

"It's so warm tonight, I could just go for an ice cream."

"Shut up, think about fish...."

"Oww not again... I hope there is a washing machine somewhere on the farm. My new jeans are filthy."

"Mine too. I need a nice sauna."

"I'm seeing stars..."

"OK that does it. Where did he hide the Playstation?"

Who is Tara thinking of?

"I'm going to win this contest. The fishing, I mean."

Meadow was the last to stop fishing.

And a penguin walking by announced the onset of winter.

They all enjoyed the fishing so much that they carried on fishing and chatting till midnight, when Gabe called a halt and they ate a late supper, after a quick shower and change.

Relationship score plus 10 points per bolt Number of fish caught at 10 points Number of boots caught at 5 points Fishing badges obtained total for day Gabe's notes
Juliette 36 10 0 20   66 Hopeless at fishing!
Natasha 56 10 20 10   96 Decent amount of fish.
Tara 67 20 10 5   103 Spent a great deal of time sitting in the mud.
Chastity 53 20 10 25   108 We agreed she should win the Boot award!
Roxie 82 0 40 10 1 132 She liked fishing and did well.
Meadow 63 20 60 5 1 148 Once again, the last to stop working was Meadow. She's a stayer, I like that. She caught the most fish (apart from me!) and was the last one to leave the pool. She couldn't have been asked to leave as she caught the most fish - but she is also the clear winner for the day.

Gabe, Meadow and Roxie each gained a Bronze Fishing Badge.

Juliette was the one with the lowest score. Gabe went to her room to explain to her, as he thought she might be upset, but she wasn't. They had the best and longest conversation they had had at that point.

"No, it's fine. I wasn't really expecting to win anything, but I've enjoyed meeting you and the girls. Thank you for having me!"

"You do know you get a $20,000 prize, don't you?

"NO! Oh, well that's great then!"

"But maybe I will put it in my Uncle's safe for now..."

"What will you do? Any plans?"

"Most likely get a place of my own, start fresh. Aunt is well now, so I can do my own thing... it is time I looked for a proper job, I suppose. Though I would really rather just settle down and raise children... I haven't found the right guy yet."

"You will, I'm sure."

Evaluation forms...

"Yes, please give me a ring when you get back."

"Bye bye Juliette. Keep in touch!"

Natasha was still a little lost.

Juliette took her departure stoically. She knew she hadn't caught Gabe's interest, after long experience with boys, her boyfriend and her cousins and at Uni, she knew how a man looked who was interested. She sighed as she got into the taxi. Things seemed to never quite work out right for her. She had phoned her Uncle and her Aunt Goneril was much better; the children were at school and doing well. Uncle Albany agreed she should try to make a fresh start, neither Verona nor Riverblossom Valley, but maybe in town. She had never lived in a large town before, and thought that might work. And the prize money would buy her a little place of her own, no apartment life for her.

Leaving, Juliette was asked to complete a form about her relationships with members of The Farm.

Gabe 52 nice guy but not for me.
Chastity 100 a great friend.
Natasha 30 she's okay.
Tara 68 a very sincere person, a good friend.
Roxie 100 a great friend.
Meadow 68 lovely person, a good friend.
overall impression of the Challenge It was great to meet all of the girls and Gabe. His farm is lovely, but farming is very hard work, and I don't think it's for me.

Aftermath

Juliette bought a small house in Belladonna Cove, in the same street as Jodie.
