Gothic style

The late medieval period runs from about 1000 AD to 1500 in western Europe.
The birth place of Gothic furniture was France. The word Gothic was coined during the Renaissance, taken  from the barbaric Goth race which sacked Rome, as an insult to the Medieval style of architecture!
The furniture was increasingly ornamented with botanical and figural motives, like gothic rose and lily. You also find pointed arches, tracery facades, cusps, trefoil and quadrofoil forms from the architecture and the linenfold panel which reflected the importance of the cloth industry.
The X-shaped chair from former times was also typically Gothic.
Most common wood to build furniture was using oak in northern Europe, in other areas fruitwoods and cypress. The furniture was constructed using mortice and tenon joints.
