The Sims Online aka EALand

Maxis

Released December 2002

When The Sims Online was released on December 17th last year [2002] Electronic Arts (EA) had high hopes. With the offline version [Sims 1] selling 8 million copies around the world, EA set a modest target of 200,000 registrants for the online version by the end of March this year. EA admitted on Wednesday, however, that sales were not as expected, with only 82,000 people registered with only two months to go to meet targets.

In March 2007, EA announced that the product would be re-branded as EA-Land and major enhancements would be made. About a year later, EA announced that the game would shut down all activity on August 1, 2008. source EA stated that it's committed to the project and is in it for the long haul to build up a large community. In a bid to bolster current sales, EA is taking steps by reducing the retail price from US$49 to $39, and moving forward the dates that additional content will be added.

There was a subscription price as well as the cost of the initial boxed game. "Who wants to pay even $40 for a game that requires another $10/month to play?" Comment from Akula

Despite its troubled launch and ultimately poor critical reception, SimCity sold more than 2 million copies since its March release.

This figure was revealed in a Venturebeat interview with EA labels president Frank Gibeau who called the much derided game "a success".

"We've sold more than 2 million units, and the number of people logging in and playing is holding steady," said Gibeau. "SimCity is a success."
